Professor Dr. med. Johann Bauersachs MD, FAHA, FESC is an internationally renowned expert in treatment of heart diseases with special emphasis in interventional cardiology, intensive care and heart failure.
Prof. Bauersachs has received numerous awards for his scientific achievements, including the Oskar-Lapp-Preis and the Albert-Fraenkel Preis of the German Cardiac Society and the Parmley-award from the American College of Cardiology. He has published over 150 scientific articles and is member of many scientific societies in the cardiovascular field.
Prof. Bauersachs and his team are widely recognized experts in treating cardiovascular disorders and diseases. The Department of Cardiology and Angiology is at the forefront of modern patient care in the cardiovascular field and internationally known for its cutting edge research.
The Catheterization labs are staffed by specially trained physicians and nurses providing state of the art treatment for patients with heart and vascular diseases. Up to date interventional cardiology and angiology is used for the treatment of coronary and peripheral vascular disease by angioplasty and stents including the use of intravascular ultrasound and pressure wire technique. We routinely perform closure of atrial septal defects (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO). Our Department offers the latest inventions in interventional cardiology, including transfemoral aortic valve implantation (TAVI), treatment of mitral valve regurgitation with the MitraClip-system and the occlusion of the left atrial appendage (LAA) with the Watchman occlusion system.
All cardiovascular Imaging systems (echocardiography including three dimensional (3D), cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), myocardial scintigraphy and positron emission tomography (PET)) are available for the diagnosis and treatment of all different kinds of cardiovascular disease conditions.
As one of the premier research focus we are committed to the advancement of acute and chronic heart failure therapy. A special interdisciplinary area of expertise is the treatment of pregnancy associated cardiomyopathies, especially peripartal cardiomyopathy (PPCM).
Cardiac arrhythmia and electrophysiology is another field of particular expertise. Besides serving the full range of conventional catheter ablation, we are one of the few clinics worldwide applying magnetic navigations systems successfully. Implantation of internal defibrillators and biventricular pacemakers for cardiac resynchronization therapy are performed routinely.
Our cardiologists offer services for diagnosis and treatment of specific cardiovascular condition areas:
• Acute and chronic heart failure
• Coronary heart disease / interventional cardiology
• Valve and Structural Heart Diseases
• Peripartum cardiomyopathy
• Adult Congenital Heart Disease
The Department of Cardiology and Angiology has multiple internationally recognized research groups and is hosting two full research professorships (Prof. K. Wollert and Prof. D. Hilfiker-Klein). Special research interests are cardiac remodelling and healing after myocardial infarction, heart failure, peripartal cardiomyopathy (PPCM), vascular biology, atherosclerosis and platelet function. Our research groups are funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the excellence cluster REBIRTH “From Regenerative Biology to Reconstructive Therapy”, the German ministry of education and other sponsors
