Job History

  • studies of sociology and psychology at the University of Mannheim
  • Diploma in sociology in 1984
  • Doctorate in social psychology at the University of Mannheim in 1989
  • Qualification for professorship in Medical Sociology (Habilitation) at the University of Düsseldorf in 1998
  • Research Associate at the Departments of Medical Sociology in Marburg and Düsseldorf
  • Since 1998 Director of the working group of Medical Sociology at Hanover Medical School
  • From 2003 to 2005 provisional head of the Department of General Medicine
  • Since 2005 Director of the Medical Sociology Unit at Hanover Medical School





The main research interests are focused on the interplay between social and psychological factors and disease. This includes

  • consequences of diseases on psychological states and social positions, and
  • effects of social positions, living conditions, and acute stressors on the onset and course of diseases

 Descriptions of the current projects 

            Long-term consequences of congenital heart disease (I)

            Long-term consequences of congenital heart disease (II)

            Effects of social factors on the course of breast cancer

            Social inequality and diseases


Furthermore interest on research methods, especially construction and development of questionnaires as well as linking of qualitative and quantitative methods

  • President of the European Society of Health and Medical Sociology (2003-2006)
  • From 2006 to 2008 member of the executive committee
  • Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Interdisciplinary Research Center on Health Care Systems and Welfare Politics, University Magna Graecia in Catanzaro, Italy since 2007
