Synopsis

In the context of solid organ transplantation, the activity of the immune system plays an important role for organ function and, thus, also for organ and patient survival. The ultimate goal to adjust the immunosuppressive treatment towards a balance between prevention of organ rejection and protection from infection, can be achieved to date only at a rough approximation due to the incomplete knowledge about reliable biomarkers for a patient’s individual immune status. Therefore, it is one of our most important goals to develop innovative strategies for the identification of biomarker candidates on the basis of a detailed understanding of the interaction between the recipient’s immune system and the transplanted organ that can be utilized as early warning system for rejection as well as for a personalized adjustment of immunosuppression of organ recipients in the future.
