Lung transplantation is an option for patients in the end stages of various lung diseases with an unfavorable prognosis and if no contraindications are present (for example other types of organ failure).

Hannover Medical School is one of the world's largest and leading lung transplant centres.

Since 1987 1747 (Status: March 2014) operations were performed as single-sided or double-sided lung transplantation including combined transplantation. The current annual activity is 120 – 140 operations.  The three-month survival rate after lung transplantation is greater than 93 Percent since 2011.

You will find more Information as a Podcast >> HERE

The most frequent diseases that make a lung transplantation necessary are various forms of lung fibrosis, cystic fibrosis and emphysema (COPD).

We ask you to send requests for a lung transplantation in written form with a current medical report (included Information on the diagnosis, pulmonary function testing, blood gases/oxygen demand, physical resilience, concomitant diseases) to the following postal address:

    Prof. Dr. med Jens Gottlieb
    Klinik für Pneumologie OE 6870
    Carl-Neuberg Str 1
    30623 Hannover
    Fax: 0511 / 532 8094

On the basis of your information we can decide about the kind of referral and about the urgency. After receipt of your request, we will return a written statement and if necessary we ask for more information to submit at the appointment.

We are pleased to answer your telephone queries under 0511532-3934 and 4681. Please let us know, if and when new medical situations arise (such us emergency inpatient treatment) for one of the candidates on the waiting list.

In the follow-up outpatient clinic in the Clinic for Pneumology we currently care for about 1000 patients after lung transplantation.  Please contact us by telephone (during off-duty hours speak to the answering machine) or by Fax to our transplant coordination in case of problems or need for information.

The long-term survival rate (5 years after) in our follow-up is more than 60 Percent and results are higher than the national and international average. Research expertise of the transplants  department include early recognition of risk factors and the treatment of chronic transplant failure, treatment of respiratory complications, infections after transplantation and new methods of patient education.

  • PNEUMOLOGICAL ONCOLOGY

    P N E U M O L O G I C A L   O N K C O L O G Y

In the pneumological oncology department the complete spectrum of the malignant diseases of thorax is  diagnosed and treated.

For diagnostic purposes the most modern imaging techniques ( Computer Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Tomography, Positron Emission Tomography), all invasive methods (Bronchoscopy, Endo Bronchial Ultrasound, Transthoracic  Puncture) as well as surgical interventions are available. The latter  are  carried out  in close interdisciplinary cooperation with the Department of Cardiothoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery at the MHH.

The treatment of bronchial carcinoma (lung cancer) and pleura mesothelioma (pleural cancer)  is performed in the context of multimodal therapy  concepts.   This uses the most up-to-date treatment procedures.   Individual treatment plans are regularly  developed in multidisciplinary tumor conferences with surgeons, radiation therapists and oncologists.  The patients have the possibility to use the   innovative therapy concepts as part of clinical studies.   Besides the inpatient treatment   our interdisciplinary oncological day clinic is available for outpatient and semi-inpatient treatments.

If you have any questions or if you need more information about offered therapies, please do not hesitate to contact us at the following address.

  • PULMONARY HYPERTENSION

    P U L M O N A R Y     H Y P E R T E N S I O N

Since 1997 the clinic of pneumology operates an out-patient centre for pulmonary hypertension, chaired by Prof. Hoeper.

The latest medical treatments are available for patients with different kinds of pulmonary hypertension and are constantly developed and improved.  We offer all available therapies for pulmonary hypertension and have access to the newest developments through a regular participation in clinical studies.  Hannover Medical school also offers the complete range of treatments for patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) including operative therapeutic options (pulmonary endarterectomy), interventional procedures (balloon pulmonary angioplasty) and a drug therapy.

Telephone consultations for doctors in attendance are possible at any time by the telephone number or email cited below.

If you would like to register a patient, please send us the relevant papers by fax or regular mail (not by e-mail, for reasons of data protection). Right heart catheterization prior to the registration is not necessary; if this has already been executed, we ask you for the complete results.

We offer all currently available therapeutic options for patients with CTEPH :

    • operative therapeutic options (pulmonary endarterectomy)

    • drug therapy

    • balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA)

Our patients receive elaborated diagnostic procedures using right-heart catheters and modern imaging methods. During a multi-disciplinary conference, an experienced, interdisciplinary team of experts including specialists for internal medicine, surgery and radiology decide on the optimal therapeutic option for each individual patient.

A successful pulmonary endarterectomy program has been established several years ago at the Department of Cardiothoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery at MHH.

For our non-operable patients we offer balloon pulmonary angioplasty and/or medical treatment.

Balloon pulmonary angioplasty is successfully performed at Hannover Medical School since 2013. This interventional procedure targets residual post-embolic lesions in the peripheral pulmonary arteries, i.e. in areas that are not accessible for surgical therapy. Although this procedure still needs to be further evaluated, our initial experience with more than 200 procedures has been positive, both in terms of safety and efficacy.
