The objective of the "Coordination Action" TONECA was devoted to the elucidation of the mechanisms responsible for development of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Within this European T1DM research network (members) an ANIMAL MODEL CATALOGUE comparing the four established spontaneous animal models of T1DM. The four models are the NOD mouse, the BioBreeding diabetes-prone (BBdp) rat, the Komeda diabetes-prone (KDP) rat and the LEW.1AR1-iddm rat. In addition the catalogue comprises a comparison with the situation in patients with T1DM. The data collection in the ctalaogue has been compiled on the basis of the information collected from the literature.
