Prof. Reinhold E. Schmidt is Director of the Department of Medicine, also Director of the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at the Hannover Medical University (MHH). In addition, he is the Dean of the Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS). His research covers mainly pathomechanisms in immunodeficiency, AIDS, as well as autoimmune diseases. His projects deal with the interactions of innate immune cells with the regulatory cells. Moreover, he studies the immune mechanisms for loss of CD4 cells and reconstitution of the immune system in HIV.
The research in innate immunity and autoimmune diseases focuses on basic mechanisms of inflammation, in particular Fc receptors and autoantibody-mediated mechanisms.
