Severe manifestations of infectious disease often occur in the very young and the very old. Susceptibility to infection may also be inherited to acquired, for example as a side effect of immunosuppressive therapy or another infection. In these individuals, severe infections often curtail the success of modern medicine.

The newly established Cluster of Excellence RESIST wants to drive forward our understanding of the fundamental determinants of susceptibility to infectious diseases to the point where this newly gained knowledge can be used to develop more accurate, personalized therapies, diagnostic methods and novel preventive strategies. RESIST research focuses on host genetic factors determining the severity of bacterial and viral infections, explores how the immune response is primed in very young and reshaped in older individuals, and investigates the dynamics of microbial communities and determinants of bacterial and viral persistence and replication. This research programme is designed around numerous existing and planned cohorts at the heart of RESIST and builds on a powerful consortium of leading clinicians and scientists assembled by one of Germany’s leading University Medical Centres: Hannover Medical School (MHH). Apart from MHH, the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI), the Twincore in Hannover, Hannover Veterinary University (TiHo), the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) in Hamburg and the Centre for Chronic Immunodeficiencies (CCI) in Freiburg participate in and contribute to an excellent infrastructure to RESIST.

This opening symposium serves to introduce the newly founded Excellence Cluster RESIST and to bring together worldwide leading researchers and clinicians in the field of Infection and Immunity. The intellectual and interdisciplinary exchange will pave the way for novel international collaborations and in the long-term open new avenues to treat infections in susceptible patients.

This Herrenhausen Symposium is jointly organized by the Volkswagen Foundation and Hannover Medical School.
