In October 2001 Professor Förster accepted the new C4 Professorship in Immunology at Hannover Medical School and has since then led the department of the same name.
The department is currently made up of 38 co-workers, of whom 8 are research associates and 17 are PhD students.
The department investigates molecular processes in the immune defence system, focusing on the mechanisms of immune cell migration.

From 2001 until early 2004 the institute was based at Medical Park, near to the campus of Hannover Medical School
In spring 2004 the institute moved into the building of the brand-new Transplant Research Centre on the campus of Hannover Medical School.
