Clinical Profile

Our institution is designed to meet the needs of women throughout all stages of life.
Our gynaecologists, physician's assistants and nurses are specialized in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of women’s health problems.
The group of gynaecologists includes specialists in gynaecological surgery, gynaecological oncology and breast cancer.

For the infertile couple, we provide microsurgery as state-of-art, compassionate care. We advocate minimally invasive (laparoscopic) gynaecological surgery for all benign and malignant diseases, including cancer of the cervix and uterus; in the treatment of early cervical cancer, we focus on the preservation of fertility (the uterus).

The Interdisciplinary Breast Diagnostic and Treatment Centre evaluates and treats patients with breast cancer and all breast-related diseases, and is highly skilled in plastic surgery.
The Centre has an outstanding reputation for patients with hereditary breast (and ovarian) cancer. All gynaecological cancer patients are evaluated by a multispecialist tumour board in order to determine appropriate individual treatment options, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Our team is specialized in providing forefront oncological treatment with chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, and the use of antibodies and small molecules in gynaecological and breast cancer.

Scientific Profile

A number of outstanding research groups work within the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics supported by national and European funding.
One major area of research concerns diseases of the lower female genital tract: pathogenesis, diagnosis and modern treatment approaches.

Currently, preclinical and clinical trials are being conducted using new molecules to evaluate from bench to bedside the role of fluorescence diagnosis and photodynamic therapy in precancerous lesions.

Another successful research group aims at the detection of genes which are involved in the pathogenesis of hereditary breast cancer.

Hannover Medical School is the coordinator of a pan-European research programme within the EU project NEOBRAIN, which seeks to identify strategies to diagnose and prevent insults to the newborn brain, and has established a broad network of cooperating research groups.
