Even before there was an MHH, there was a Society of Friends of the MHH. Founded in 1964, its donations and membership fees are chiefly used to support research projects, to finance staff positions and medical equipment, to fund international externships and to honour scientific work.
Donors have also made endowments and entrusted these funds to the Friends of the MHH; among such awards are the Johann Georg Zimmermann Prize for cancer research, the Rudolf Schön and Jan Brod Prizes for clinical research, the Sir Hans Krebs Prize for basic medical research, and the European Interferon Prize.
The Society of Friends now has over 800 members and many financial contributors; in 2004 the Friends provided the MHH support amounting to approximately one million Euros.
