The Dept. of Pediatric Surgery is a tertiary institution based in the Medical School Hannover and is the only university pediatric surgical department in the province of Lower Saxony (7.9 million inhabitants).
The Dept. of Pediatric Surgery's team has 23 members. The medical team consists of a director/chairman, 5 consultant pediatric surgeons and 8 residents. A research laboratory, with 2 part-time biologists and a medical-technical assistant, is an integral part of the department.
The department has 4 wards (infants, children, interdisciplinary, daycare) with, altogether, 36 + 15 beds. There are 2 operating theaters with the capacity to perform minimally invasive surgery, laser surgery, urologic endoscopy and x-ray. There are also facilities for urodynamic examinations, rectomanometry and ultrasound.
Main clinical priorities are: Minimally invasive surgery, neonatology, oncology, urology and thoracic surgery. Approximately 2000 operations per year are performed, including more than 200 major minimally invasive thoracic and abdominal procedures.
The research laboratory handles cell cultures, animal models (rat, mouse, knock-out mouse), PCR, western blot, FACS-analysis and numerous other immunological investigations.
There are numerous ongoing clinical studies concerning, in particular, minimally invasive techniques and the pathophysiological consequences. Basic research projects focus on 3 subjects: Immunological response to surgical trauma, biliary atresia, oncology.
