Origin: Druckrey, 1950, from Wistar rats obtained from the Unilever Research Institute, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, to Han, to Ztm 1994.

 

Reproduction: Fair reproductive performance; average number weaned per female per week 0.85.

 

Characteristics: Up to 25% of animals are born with microphthalmia or anophthalmia.

 

Tumours (Spontaneous): In a life-span study with female BDII rats maintained under different conditions the incidence of endometrial carcinomas (mostly adenocarcinomas) was variable 92% in animals fed a purified diet, 90% in conventionally maintained animals, 65% in retired breeders, 58% in germfree rats, and none in ovariectomized animals (2). Genetic marker profile described by Bender et al. (1).
